The Health Benefits of Coffee

From the desk of Dixie Rose:

This is going to come as a shock to a lot of people, but coffee is just loaded with health benefits. It is true! Because coffee tastes so good and provides so much pleasure to coffee lovers, it stands to reason that it would have to be unhealthy, like French fries or T-bone steak or a good cigar, right? Nope! Wrong! Coffee is actually good for you and it is just full of health benefits.

First, coffee has long been known to improve mental alertness and relieve the boredom of repetitious tasks, but that is not even a scratch on the surface of the health benefits that coffee provides.

The Sumatra Coffees

In the past, the only known ways of processing coffee are by drying the coffee bean while still in the fruit (dry method) and by removing the fruit from the bean before it’s dried (washed or wet method). Sumatra coffee follows a modified process. After picking, the coffee skins are removed then they will be subjected to an overnight fermentation with the absence of water thus calling the procedure dry fermentation. Afterwards, they will be washed in water to remove the pulp and then set for drying. (In a nutshell, Sumatra coffee undergoes the two procedures.) However, not all pulp can be removed by mere scrubbing giving the coffee a ferment taste.

Coffee and Alzheimers

From the desk of Dixie Rose:

Here is some really, really good news for all of us coffee drinkers! There is very real and reliable scientific information that suggests that coffee drinkers are less likely (far less likely) to suffer from Alzheimer’s disease or dementia than non coffee drinkers.

So, the next time somebody tells you that coffee is going to give you ulcers (or some other nonsense), just tell them that you are drinking coffee for the medicinal purpose of preventing Alzheimer’s disease, and that you can prove it.

The first known study of determining whether coffee drinking could prevent Alzheimer’s disease was conducted in Portugal in 2002. The researchers set out to discover whether the caffeine in coffee could prevent or delay the degeneration of the brain that occurs before Alzheimer’s is diagnosed. (More...)

The Coffee Culture in the USA

It wasn’t until I moved to the US that I started drinking coffee regularly and became what they call in the Netherlands a ‘koffieleut’, which translates literally into ‘coffee socialite.’ Although the average European drinks more coffee per year than the average American, the cultural importance and its effects on the average European seems to me smaller than that on the average American. After all, coffee is a cultural obsession in the United States.

Chains with thousands of branches like Dunkin’ Donuts or Starbucks dominate US daily street life. Especially in the morning (90% of coffee consumed in the US is in the morning), millions of white foamy cups with boldly imprinted pink and orange logos bob across the streets in morning rush hour and on the train. Coffee drive-ins are a saving grace for (More...)
